Recent Reads April/May 2020

Hello, Everyone welcome to another (late) recent reads. These books are going to be from April and May but since I posted my OWLS readathon blog post, I’ll link it but I will not be repeating those books: https://bethreadsandwrites.wixsite.com/beth-v/post/o-w-l-s-read-a-thon-wrap-up .

The first book I read in the month of April was The 5th Wave by Yancey Rick. I found this book really fun and it was a super quick read. This book was about an alien apocalypse and government control. I gave this book three and half stars because it was definitely fun and interesting but I do not remember many things about the actual plot as everything moved so quickly. There was also a weird romance slipped into the book that was honestly kind of weird and creepy.

The second book I read was an audiobook called A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. This

classic is about the French Revolution and I know it is a loved classic but I thought it was just okay so I gave it two and a half stars. I thought the ending was really good and the characters were really developed but Dickens' writing is not really for me, but the story was really good.

The next book I read was Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo! I know this book was really hyped in the last couple of years but it really is amazing. I haven’t read a book like this in such a long time because all of the characters were relatable. The romances were also amazing and they were not forced because all of the characters had chemistry. The friend group also had a crazy friendship dynamic that I really don’t see a lot of in YA fantasy. Okay I’ll tell you what the book is about: There are six crows- Kaz, Inej, Nina, Jasper, Matthias, and Wylan. This group of unlikely friends goes on a crazy mission to break into one of the hardest places in Katterdam.

The fourth book I read is Loki: Where

Mischief Lies by Mackenze Lee. I read this book for the weekend reading rush going on in April. This book was very entertaining and the representation of Loki was amazing as he presented as both female and make plus he was shown to be bisexual. This book followed a pretty formulaic plot and it was very predictable but it was also very entertaining.

The final book I read in April was Escape from the Isle of the Lost by Melissa De La Cruz. I gave this book a three and half stars because the plot was very basic but this book is really entertaining (yes I know I’ve said this a lot but a lot of these books are good, they are just not mind blowing. This is the fourth book in the Isle of the Lost series, and I really enjoyed seeing Hades and Uma in this book, plus all of the characters had pretty good character development.

The first book I read in May is Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo!!! I love this duology so much but honestly I really love these characters which I know I said before but these characters were just beautifully written. Leigh Bardugo is now one of my favorite authors so I’m going to try to go through all of her books so far. This book follows right after the one ends so I can’t say much without spoilers (PS this is the second book of Six of Crows).

The next book I read was a nonfiction book called The Autobiography of Jack the Ripper by James Carnac. This book was supposeable written by the real Ripper so that part of the story was really interesting. I had to give this book three stars because I could not fall into the writing but that's because it was written a long time ago. It did hold a lot of information about Carnacs childhood and what he did after his killing spree.

The final book I read was Throw Like a Girl by Sarah Henning. This was a really good book and it almost made it to five stars, I gave it a four and half but that's just because it had too many tropes for my taste but the romance was super cute. I also loved the female athlete aspect. Okay now I’ll tell you what the story is about now: Liv the main character gets kicked out of her school/softball team because she punches the pitcher on the opposite team. She then has to move to that school because she lost her scholarship to her private school, so then she joined the football team to prove to that softball coach she is a team player. This book does have LGBTQ+ representation and it was really well done.

Those are the books I’ve been reading and they were mostly just okay but there were a few golden gems in those reading months. What have you guys been reading? Have you been reading more than usual or less than usual?
