Time for another book review, Guys, hope you enjoy. The three books that I will be talking
about is the princess saves herself in this one, the witch doesn't burn in this one, and the mermaid's voice returns in this one. All of them are by Amanda Lovelace! There is a few trigger warning in all of the books so I'll quickly list them out. Child abuse, partner abuse, bullying, sexual assault, self-harm, eating disorders, queerphobia, menstruation, alcoholism, racism, trauma, death, suicide, grief, cancer, fire. Those are some of the trigger warning but not all of them.
This book series was so well written and had so many tough subjects. She was able to fit in all of these tough subjects in this series, but she did not rush on any of them.
The Princess saves Herself in this One is the first poetry collection in this series. Here are some of the most powerful hitting quotes in this part of the collection. "My body was no longer my own but everyone else's" (32). When I first read this quote I started to think about how society is always telling females to change their bodies. Social media is a big part of that because others are always comparing themselves to others on that platform.
"silence has always been my loudest scream" (32). Some people are silenced because of internal problems. Sometimes when people have mental illnesses, they don't want to talk about how they are truly feeling.
"Where was my fear of fire when it came to you?" (54). This quote made me shut the book and really think about how some people come into your life and then leave, like nothing ever happened. Lovelace was talking about a romantic partner, but truly a friend can hurt you just as much as a person your "in love with", they can just leave with all of the trust/secrets that you talked to them about.
"it (love) did not teach me anything except how to be afraid to love anyone" (96). Sometimes love is something that breaks you and sometimes its the thing that consumes you. After a break up with someone it can hurt and someone might not want to feel that ever again so they hide from the feeling of love. They never want to show that part of themselves again.
This poem really hit me personally because of my age. Many older adults are trying to blames the younger generation for not standing up when in reality things started happening in there generation without them even knowing.
This next quote personally made me cry. "you are so so so much more than the possibility of children" (179). I know that that this quote may not seem perpetually sad, but I personally do not want kids. When I try to tell people this they always try to change my mind. I hope that any women that are reading this is never forced to have a child if they do not want one.
In the second poetry collection, the witch does not burn in this one discusses how women can be fighters and our history shows that. Amanda Lovelace was really able to allude to the Salem Witch trials.
Here are some of my favorite quotes/poems:
"so what happens when women finally learn to throw back"(11). This was such a powerful quote because in history when women started to fight for their rights men and other women thought they were crazy. For example, when women were fighting for the right to vote they were thrown into the insane asylum. Even other women thought they were crazy and wore sashes with the word Anti on it.
This poem brings up family and how learning to fight and improve on family traits throughout time.
"they wanted us to be weak but forced us to be strong"(39). This does not even have to be a big thing. When people tell you that you can't do something then it can be more motivation to be even better at it.
This specific poem can offend some people depending on their religion but for me personally I found it to be a really strong poem. It represents women stepping up against the government and society as a whole to fight for what they believe in. Many people in the olden days sent away people with their own minds.
"a witch knows mirrors do sometimes lie" (92). The author was able to allude to the classic witch story, while adding a theme of body positivity.
"take this pen from me & uncage her"(155). Writing can be an escape to get out all the feelings that someone is holding in. Uncaging your personality on a page is what every inspiring author wants to do.
The third and final poetry book, the mermaid's voice returns in this one, talks about partner abuse and LGBTQ+.
Here are some of the most hard hitting quotes in my opinion:
"I have a terrible habit of writing myself braver than I'll ever be" (7). Having the ability to write yourself into a story is the ability too change the characteristics that you hate most about yourself.
"no I'd rather be her"(25). Confidence can be hard, especially sense the people that are surrounding us seems to have the perfect lives, the perfect amount of confidence.
This poem reminds me of a song by NF and the song is called "Lie". In the song it says, "took you out when I had no money"; this talks about a different way the partner call "pull someone down".
This book was really emotional and I can't truly discuss these problems because I have never been through it and I don't know how to discuss this.
Thank you so much for reading all the way through, this took me weeks to write!
