The book I will be talking about today is The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. This book was required reading for my English class but I ended up really enjoying it, and gave it a four out of five stars. Before I get into spoilers, I'll explain more about what the book is about: The main character Hester Prynne, was accused of Adultery. If you didn't know what Adultery is: it's when someone who is married has sexual intercourse with someone outside of that marriage. For Hester's "crimes" she has been outcast from society, so she had to take her daughter and live outside of town with a scarlet letter stitched to her chest.
The Next part of this explanation will include spoilers so if you haven't read the book and still want to read it, go and read the book then come back.
I really did enjoy this book, but I gave it a four star rating was because the ending was kinda predicable. The father of the baby was the minister, and it was easy to figure out for me because he was the least likely person it could be. The minster was also presented as a male lead because he was the most talked about male throughout the novel. My favorite parts of the novel is when Hester is trying to teach her daughter, Pearl, to stand up for herself. Pearl was being bullied for her mothers mistakes, and Hester wanted her to grow up and be strong and independent. Hester was also able to show that she was strong and independent. For example, "They said that it meant Abel, so strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman's strength" (91). In this quote the author also uses an allusion of the bible, when she talks about Abel. Abel was the second child of Adam and Eve, and was killed by his brother Cain because of pure jealousy.
