December and January

Hello Everyone! Sorry for not posting as often but school has been super stressful lately but hopefully it will be slowing down soon. But let's stop discussing my life and get to the actual book.

The first book I finished was Hamlet by William Shakespeare. This was read for my AP Lit class, and I really enjoyed this book, and it's a classic but it had some very interesting topics. This book was about the main character Hamlet, who finds out that his dad was murdered by his step dad, Cladius. This book also discussed mental health because Hamlet is trying to decide if he actually wants to live or see his revenge go through.

The second book I read in December is

Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. This was also for my AP Lit class, but this is one of my favorite books that I read for that class so far. This book is set in the 50’s, when the civil rights movement was going along. The main character was unnamed through the entire book to represent how invisible he is and how his actions did not make that big of a change in the entire movement so he feels that he is invisible and insignificant. This book was very intense and made you want to keep reading it, even though it is a little bit over 500 pages, at least in the edition I had.

The third book I read this month was a book that I wanted to read for a while, Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia. This book had the main character having major social anxiety, named Eliza. She is a fangirl and writes a super famous fanfiction called The Monstrous Sea, but nobody knows that it's her writing because she goes under a fake username, LadyConstellation. The anxiety representation was really well done and the relationship was the cutest thing ever. They both had to deal with their own mental health but they were able to help each other. They were able to be each others outlet.

The final book I read in December was A

Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard. This book was about a main character named Steffi, who is a selective mute, because of her major anxiety. This story is all about her trying to make her own decisions and go off to college after her senior year of high school. Her best friend leaves her school at the beginning of the book and she doesn’t really have anyone else at school until she meets Rhy. Rhy is a deaf main character that is struggling with communication because no one else knows sign language in the school except Steffi, so they become really close. This book made me so happy because it was cute, sad and it had a little bit of everything. The anxiety representation was so good and the panic attacks were really well written.

The first book I read in 2020 is Gravity by Sarah Deming. I loved this book as well but for a different reason! It is about a female boxer! This book follows Gravity Delago and how she falls in love with boxing and deals with her broken home life. It shows all of the hard work that boxers have to put in at the gym to get to the olympics. The relationships in this book, friendships, and love are just amazing. The characters are amazing and each one of them are different. The book also has so much diversity as the main character is half Dominican and half Jewish.

The next book I read was for my AP Lit

class, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I struggled reading this book because of the language that was presented in the book. I gave this book three stars because it was okay. It wasn’t something I would choose to read on my own, but I’m glad that I did. This book was about family, love and revenge.

The last book I read in January was A Story of a Girl by Sara Zarr. I read this book in two days. I was not a perfect book

by all means but it was so good. It discussed slut shaming and how it is portrayed in high school. This book follows a girl named Deanna who was caught with a high school student, Tommy Webber, when she was thirteen years old. This changed her whole life because people did not want anything to do with her including her dad. Her dad could not even look at her sense he was the one to catch her. This book also discussed her family dynamics which was super interesting and a major part of the actual story.

Those were the books I’ve read in the last two months and again sorry about not posting, my life has been super busy. Have you guys read any of these books? How has your reading been? How was your 2019?
