Hello and welcome to this discussion type about LGBTQ+ books. I wanted to talk about this because of it being pride month, but I also wanted to put up a disclaimer that I don’t read a lot of books about certain labels but I would like to start reading about this community more to diversify my reading and to learn more about their struggles. I will also be adding spoilers about some of these books. If you have any more book recommendations that you believe have good representation about the LGBTQ+ community please let me know!
With the few books I have read with this type of representation, there are a few main characters I will be discussing as well as some minor characters. The first characters will come from The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. The couple I’m going to talk about is Alec and Magnus because first of all they are adorable and totally my OTP. I like the way that Alec had to deal with his sexuality because this was really my first experience reading this type of representation (I read this series in Middle school). He hadn’t told his parents about him being gay because he didn’t really want to admit it to himself. Magnus was a warlock who was bisexual. These two found each other in the best times for both of them, and there was so much drama. I loved this relationship!
The next characters I will be talking about is from the novel Simon vs The Homo Sapiens
Agenda by Becky Albertalli. This does include spoilers of the cannon couple in this book so if you haven’t read it skip to the next section. The couple that I’m going to be talking about is Simon and Bram!! I love these two characters together, they are adorable and their personalities go together so much. Simon really struggled with coming out to his family, until he fell in love with Blue (AKA Bram). And if you have read this book, the oreo scenes were just amazing even though they were just a small part of them flirting.
The next character is Avi from Heretics Anonymous by Katie Henry. This character was really well done and this novel did a really good job on adding his sexuality but not letting that take over his whole character. Avi was a strong whole character that came from a Jewish religion and I haven’t seen that done a lot in books.
My favorite side character came from
Story of a Girl by Sara Zarr and his name is Micheal. He identifies as gay and that was really good representation because a lot of books wouldn’t talk much about about their side characters and their sexual orientation. This was a really short book but Micheal really became a father figure for Deanna when she was going through a really rough time in school/ family issues.
The final characters I’m going to talk about is from a fantasy book called Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. This is a very small part of this book but you can definitely tell that these two characters flirt. These two characters would be Wyland and Jesper! Jesper is bisexual and
I loved that part because I do not see many authors writing bi characters. If you have any more recommendations for bi characters please let me know. The relationship development between Jesper and Wyland between the first and second book was perfectly written as they came into themselves and their relationship.
Those are the books that have some of my favorite characters (yes I know all of these characters are all guys). I want to read more books with more representation than I have been so maybe I’ll update this list at a later date. Again if you do have any recommendations please let me know!
