Hello everyone, annotating books is a controversial topic in the book community because some people believe that annotating books are destroying them. My personal opinion is annotation is a way to make your books a part of you and a way to show your personality throughout your reading collection.
My annotating style is different depending on if I read it for school or if I'm reading the book for fun.
The first thing I'm going to discuss is how I annotate for school. For school the supplies I use is yellow highlighter, colorful tab, black pens, post it notes, and index cards. When I'm reading for school, I usually only read the book once because there are usually a dead line so I have to read it a little faster than I normally would read a book that I'm annotating. I highlight important quotes to the plot or quotes that I believe have strong diction or syntax. If a page has super strong writing or sentence structure I will usually tab it with either blue (sadness), yellow (important), or green (humor) depending on how the structure affects the tone. Depending on the length of the book I usually stick note cards about every fifty pages.
I do use the same supplies when I annotate for fun. The only true difference from my school novels and the novels I keep at home is my comments that I write. I try to make more personal connections when I annotate for a book review. I also try to make short comments.
Annotating helps bring me into the story more so I hope this helps you do the same.
Let me know if decide to start annotating your books or not?
